Black Lacquered Japanese Tansu

H 114cm W 85cm D42cm

A very attractive and versatile Japanese black & cherry wood (coloured) lacquer seven-drawer tansu (travelling chest) Meiji period early 20th century (1868-1912). Constructed from sugi (cedar) wood, with iron handles and lock furniture. Well built yet surprisingly light weight making it easy to move around. The piece has been cleaned and waxed to retain all its character.

The chest is strong and sturdy with all drawers gliding well. The iron wear has tarnished (rusted) over the years and the there are numerous knocks, dinks and marks picked up over the years as to be expected and all adding to the look of the piece. The black drawer fronts have dulled over the years and do not have a high gloss finish (which is nicer in our opinion), the black is not completely flat and has contrasting tones. The internal drawers are very clean considering it age. Overall a very good looking piece that would add interest to any home.
